The Jeffrey Pine Tree, otherwise known as the Lone Sentinel Tree, was once thriving in the Yosemite National Park. It was a wondrous and well-beloved tree which fell victim to drought in 1977. It remains on top of the Sentinel Dome, a bleached toppled wood, a reminder of where it thrived and what it now represents as climate change lives in the forefront of our concerns.

The vernacular images in this project were scanned vintage postcards dual printed onto photographic paper, then embroidered. These small works contain two images: the formal positive on one side, the reverse negative on the other. The embroidery reflects a self-possessed narrative, while the reversal side is mixed with chaos and beauty. The binary juxtapositions between a positive/negative, light/shadow, life/death, each image and version of the tree has its own story, and no one side tells it all.

These embroidered images are unique, with editions of three (3).
